There are several reasons for this, as the Braun Satin Hair 7 ST 710 Straightener performed outstandingly in terms of features, workmanship, performance, and ease of use. Besides the Iontec technology, the clear display for temperature control and the moveable styling plate, the Braun Satin Hair 7 ST 710 straightener also scores with so-called Nanoglide ceramic plates, a Cool Touch tip, and a temperature boost button. No matter if you want to straighten your hair professionally or if you want to style light waves or racy curls – with Braun Satin Hair 7 ST 710 Straightener, you are perfectly advised in any case!

The Braun Satin Hair 7 ST 710 Straightener is a straightening appliance designed to be gentle to the hair. The results achieved are convincing all along the line. Even during the application, it becomes clear that Braun Satin Hair 7 ST 710 Straightener is a high-quality straightener as the hair glides smoothly through the two heating plates. As the maximum temperature is 200°C, it is unlikely that Braun Satin Hair 7 ST 710 Straightener will permanently damage the hair structure.

The features

The Braun Satin Hair 7 ST 710 straightener has a lot to offer in terms of features: it features ceramic plates that are extremely smooth and innovative ion technology. Also, the temperature can be set manually to a value between 130 and 200°C to suit the hair type. The heating plates of Braun Satin Hair 7 ST 710 Straightener are flexibly mounted with a width of 24 mm each to ensure that the pressure is evenly distributed on the hair of the treated strand.

The Braun Satin Hair 7 ST 710 straightener also scores points when it comes to heat-up time, as 130°C is reached in just 35 seconds and 200°C in only 70 seconds.

The Braun Satin Hair 7 ST 710 straightener also features an integrated automatic shut-off after 30 minutes, a two-meter long cable with joint and a heat-insulated tip.

The features of the Braun Satin Hair 7 ST 710 straightener at a glance:

  • heat-insulated tip
  • Ion Technology
  • two-meter long cable with joint
  • integrated automatic switch-off after 30 minutes
  • Manual temperature adjustment to suit hair type (130-200 degrees C.)
  • extremely smooth and also flexibly mounted ceramic plates
  • 24-millimeter wide heating plates
  • fast warm-up time: 35 seconds to 130 degrees and 70 seconds to 200 degrees

The processing

Braun Satin Hair 7 ST 710 is a high-quality straightener made from a mix of materials. Besides silver, shiny plastic, black plastic as well as ceramic and other materials are used. All in all, the Braun Satin Hair 7 ST 710 straightener has a beautiful and handy design. The tip of the straightening iron is heat-insulated, so it won’t get hot even when using your Braun Satin Hair 7 ST 710 straightener for a longer period and, therefore won’t be a source of danger. Although the rest of the appliance surface gets hot, there is no risk of burns.

The Nanoglide ceramic plates are also very well made, as they have an extremely smooth surface. Besides, there are no gaps or other openings between the housing and the plates in which hair could get caught. The Braun Satin Hair 7 ST 710 Straightener is also designed to evenly distribute the pressure on the hair during straightening, as the upper ceramic plate is spring-loaded and gives way even with light pressure.

The handling

The Braun Satin Hair 7 ST 710 straightener lies perfectly in hand and is intuitive to use. The straightener is switched on and off using the On/Off button.

If the straightener is still heating up, the display will light up red. The display also shows the temperature that was last used. After only 35 seconds, you can use your Braun Satin Hair 7 ST 710 Straightener at its lowest setting, i.e., 130°C. When this temperature is reached, the display will light up green. If you want to use the straightening iron at the highest setting, i.e., 200°C, you will have to wait another half minute.

To set a specific temperature, you must use the + and – buttons. The temperature of Braun Satin Hair 7 ST 710 Straightener can be adjusted in 5 °C steps. The straightening iron also has a °C Max button. If you hold this button down a little longer, the straightening iron will automatically heat up to the maximum temperature. If the thermometer symbol is flashing on display, the temperature of the Braun Satin Hair 7 ST 710 Straightener is automatically regulated, i.e., the styling appliance either needs to cool down or heat up again.

The temperature of the straightening iron is shown on the temperature scale on the display. When the bar is at the bottom, the straightening iron has a temperature of 130°C. When the bar is at the top, the straightener has a temperature of 200°C.

If the Braun Satin Hair 7 ST 710 Straightener is not used for about 30 minutes, the styling appliance will automatically switch off for safety reasons.

Because the ceramic plates of the straightener have an extremely flat surface, hair can be straightened easily and without resistance. They cannot get caught in the appliance, and the springiness of the upper plate distributes the pressure evenly over all the hairs in a strand to be straightened. This means that the individual hairs are not subjected to more pressure than necessary. Another positive aspect is that the ceramic plates are rounded so that the hair can be styled in waves by turning them.

Regarding the handling of the straightening iron, there is only one negative aspect to note: Braun Satin Hair 7 ST 710 Straightener does not have a lock-out function. In other words, there is no possibility to fix the closed appliance in this position. This can be remedied by the good old method of cable wrapping. Wrap the cable around the housing of your Braun Satin Hair 7 ST 710 Straightener while it is closed, fix it in this position, and you can easily store it to save space.

The power

When straightening hair with Braun Satin Hair 7 ST 710 Straightener, the scales of the hair – at least at higher temperatures – will be tightly attached to the hair’s inner fibers. This results in hair that looks not only shinier but also much healthier. It should be noted that the higher the temperature of your straightening iron, the stronger this effect is. Remember, however, that too high temperatures will cause long-term damage to your hair. If you use Braun Satin Hair 7 ST 710 Straightener, you should take precautions against this as the appliance allows a maximum temperature of 200°C.

If you also want to benefit from the ionizing effect, you can do so with the Braun Satin Hair 7 ST 710 Straightener at the push of a button. If you hear a slight buzzing sound after pressing the button, you know that the appliance generates ions to neutralize the statically charged hair.

Another positive aspect is that the ionization keeps the moisture content of the hair in balance. In the course of our test, the hair still shone in all its glory after two months of use, even though the hair was straightened twice a week.

GHD Gold Classic Styler

ABSOLUTE CLASSIC: The GHD Gold Classic Styler straightening iron is not only an absolute classic but also the second-place winner in our product test. However – and this is undoubtedly an enormous disadvantage for many people who want to buy a new straightening iron – the GHD Gold Classic Styler straightening iron is also the most expensive straightening iron of the products we tested. Even if the results of the straightening are outstanding, they do not necessarily justify the price difference to other straightening irons.

The equipment

The features of the GHD Gold Classic Styler straightening iron are quite manageable. The appliance has a plate protection cap, styling plates that glide easily, have a ceramic coating and are spring-loaded, and automatic temperature adjustment. Also, the GHD Gold Classic Styler can be used with a rotating cable joint, a cable length of three meters, and a hot plate lock.

Although the rather high price of the GHD Gold Classic Styler straightening iron would suggest otherwise, the straightening iron has no ionization function, no display and no readiness indicator, no manual temperature adjustment, and no temperature key lock.

The features of the GHD Gold Classic Styler straightening iron at a glance:

plate protection cap
easy gliding styling plates
Ceramic coating
rotatable cable joint
Cable length of three meters
Hot plate lock

The processing

The GHD Gold Classic Styler straightening iron is a device with a minimalist design. Although the straightening iron is extremely powerful, it has very few frills. The GHD straightening iron Gold Classic Styler is excellently manufactured, the housing is made of high-quality plastic, and there are no crevices or cracks in which hair can get caught. The high-quality workmanship also extends to the heating plates, as they also close tight.

GHD- The abbreviation GHD stands for Good Hair Day, which is an English company. The company was founded in 2001, supplies more than 50,000 hairdressing salons around the world, and has already sold several million straighteners. If you take a closer look at the straightening iron market, you will quickly see that Good Hair Day is one of the leading manufacturers and sells its products to professionals, well-known salons, and numerous celebrities.

The handling

Compared to many other straightening irons, the GHD Gold Classic Styler straightening iron is relatively light and has a filigree appearance. This is undoubted since it is a minimalist model with only a manageable range of functions. Due to its pleasant size, the GHD Gold Classic Styler straightening iron lies well in hand. Another positive aspect is that the hair at the hairline is easily reached and can be straightened with the appliance.

The GHD Straightening Iron Gold Classic Styler also has a convincing three-meter long cable. Due to its length and the fact that the model has a fork joint, the cable never caused any problems during our product test.

Because the ceramic plates of the straightening iron are spring-loaded, the pressure is evenly distributed over all the hair in a strand of hair. The excellent finish also ensures that there is no pinching or pulling of the hair.

The performance

In terms of performance, the GHD Gold Classic Styler straightening iron scored across the board. The styling tool glides extremely gently through the hair, and both thick and curly hair is wonderfully smooth and easy to comb after just a few treatment cycles.

The GHD Gold Classic Styler straightening iron is ready for use in just 30 seconds, with the unit emitting a beeping sound when heated. Although the temperature cannot be set manually, the automatically set temperature is between 175°C and 185°C, which is a temperature range that generally does not damage the hair.

Conclusion

The GHD Gold Classic Styler is undoubtedly an absolute cult model that, instead of additional functions and other frills, focuses on high-quality workmanship, excellent handling, and first-class performance. Even though the straightening iron has neither manually adjustable heat levels nor a temperature key lock nor a display, it is compelling. So it is gentle on the hair and intuitive in its use. However, if you look at the price, the styling appliance’s cult status seems to pay off without a doubt.

PROS:
  • moderate temperature range between 175 °C and 185 °C

  • simple, intuitive handling
  • very smooth gliding
  • excellent results in straightening the hair
CONS:

Remington S6500

THE MULTI TALENT: The Remington S6500 straightener Sleek & Curl is not a classic straightener, but rather a multi-talent, because the Remington straightener can not only straighten hair but also conjure up different curl styles. The slim multi appliance with rounded housing has numerous additional functions such as a temperature lock, a lock and display function, and other highlights.

The equipment

The Remington S6500 straightening iron Sleek & Curl has relatively long, but narrow styling plates of about 110 millimetres, which have a high-quality ceramic coating. According to the manufacturer, the ceramic coating used by Remington is supposed to be extremely durable; we were able to determine during the product test that they are extremely smooth.

The heating time of the Remington S 6500 Sleek & Curl iron is about 30 seconds and can thus really be described as rapid. In addition, the device scores with a rotatable cable joint and temperature control. Of course, a safety shutdown is also integrated, which takes effect after about an hour. Furthermore, the Remington S6500 Sleek & Curl straightening iron has a turbo boost function.

Even when you hold the straightening iron in your hand for the first time, you notice that it is very heavy. A look at the device data confirms this suspicion, like the Remington S6500 Sleek & Curl straightening iron, weighs almost a kilogram. The temperature range that the straightener can generate is between 150 °C and 230 °C.

The features of the Remington S6500 straightener Sleek & Curl at a glance:

  • Option for manual temperature adjustment in the range of 150 °C to 230 °C
  • high-quality ceramic coating
  • Display with integrated temperature indication
  • with 110-millimeter extra long heating plates
  • integrated automatic switch-off after 60 min
  • the package includes a storage bag
  • the package includes a DVD with various styling tips

The processing

The Remington S 6500 Sleek & Curl straightening iron is quite well made, it makes a stable impression – undoubtedly also due to its high weight. Although the straightening iron is rather functional in design, it can easily keep up with other straightening iron models.

The problem is that there is a gap between the heating plates and also close to the handle as soon as the straightening iron is pressed together, which leads to difficulties when straightening the hair. This will be discussed in more detail in the next section, namely in the “Handling” section.

The handling

Although the Remington S 6500 Sleek & Curl iron is a bit narrower and smaller – at least when compared to other models – it still has a higher weight than many other irons. So although it fits the hand quite well because of its size, both hands and arms get tired quickly when straightening hair. In our product test, many testers reported that the weight of the straightening iron is most noticeable when it is held slightly longer over the head to straighten hair strand by strand.

On the other hand, the Remington S 6500 Sleek & Curl straightener has a rounded housing, making it ideal for creating expressive curls. The situation is different when straightening hair because the larger gap at the base of the iron means that the straightening results are rather inferior. This “fault” of the Remington S 6500 straightening iron Sleek & Curl cannot be remedied even if you press the straightening iron together with enormous force at the point mentioned above – at least that’s what our testers have come to.

If an attempt is made to straighten the hair using the other end of the plate, i.e., the upper end, the hair will be torn out. Accordingly, in terms of handling, it can be said that using the Remington S 6500 Sleek & Curl straightening iron can by no means be considered pure pleasure – and this even though the device has a 360-degree swivel joint.

The Power

The performance of the Remington S 6500 Sleek & Curl straightening iron is, of course, limited by the deficit described above, namely the gap that occurs when the iron is pressed together at the base of the machine. It is a fact that those parts of the hair that ultimately do not fall out of the straightening iron are smooth and supple after use. The situation is different, however, with the strands that the appliance does not catch even when repeated several times. Accordingly, the results achieved vary enormously and range from a very good smoothing effect to no smoothing at all.

It should also be noted that the maximum temperature of the Remington S 6500 Sleek & Curl iron is 230 °C and should only be used if it is an exception. The reason for this is that such a high temperature can damage the structure of the hair inside. This can also be seen from the results because when the straightening iron is used for two months and at an application intensity of twice a week, the hairs that do not fall out of the appliance become smooth, but after some applications also dull and strawy.

Conclusion

With regard to the Remington S 6500 Sleek & Curl straightening iron, it can be said that it is a fundamentally solid device. Still, due to a “construction error” at the base of the device, a gap is created when it is pressed together, from which the hair keeps falling out. Although it is not a very good tool for straightening hair, the multifunctional tool can be used to create expressive curls.

PROS:
  • has a temperature range from 150 degrees Celsius to 230 °C
  • has narrow, but extra-long heating plates
  • is particularly suitable for styling curls
  • has a temperature barrier and a locking device
  • Display
CONS:
  • Gap at the base of the appliance when squeezed, so that the hairs can fall out
  • very high maximum temperature of 230 degrees Celsius during the application of which the hair can be damaged
  • partly inferior or no smoothing due to the gap

Grundig HS 5732 Crystal-Hairstyler

Inexpensive MULTISTYLER: Among the cheaper straightening irons in our product test is the Grundig HS 5732 Crystal-Hairstyler Straight and Curls. However, the straightening iron can certainly keep up with the more expensive models due to its good results. With Grundig HS 5732 Crystal-Hairstyler Straight and Curls, with a little practice, even unruly and thicker hair can be straightened or expressive curls can be created. It is not without reason that this model is often referred to as a multistyler.

The equipment

The Grundig Crystal-Hairstyler Straight and Curls straightening iron have a manual temperature setting, with eight levels and temperatures between 140 degrees Celsius and 210 degrees Celsius. The heating plates of the appliance have a high-quality ceramic coating and are 25 millimeters wide. To reach the operating temperature, the Grundig Crystal-Hairstyler Straight and Curls straightening iron needs about 60 seconds to reach the operating temperature, whereas it takes 60 minutes for the appliance to switch off when not in use. The Grundig Crystal Hairstyler Straight and Curls straightening iron also has a 1.8-meter long cable and a cable joint.

An overview of the features of the Grundig HS 5732 Crystal Hairstyler Straight and Curls:

  • manually adjustable temperature between 140 degrees Celsius and 210 degrees Celsius in eight stages
  • Heating plates are covered with a ceramic coating
  • Width of the heating plate is 25 millimeters
  • Automatic switch-off from 60 minutes
  • Warm-up time of 60 seconds
  • the cable is 1.8 meters long and has a cable joint

The processing

From the very first glance at the Grundig Crystal-Hairstyler Straight and Curls straightening iron, it is clear that it was designed primarily for a young target group. It is not without reason that the straightening iron comes in a bright pink – its color alone distinguishes the Grundig Crystal-Hairstyler Straight and Curls straightening iron from its competitors.

In terms of workmanship, the appliance makes a good impression in principle: when the heating plates are pressed together, there are no gaps to be seen; instead, they lie close together and are also firmly anchored in the housing.

As the heating plates have a ceramic coating, they are incredibly smooth; the hair glides through very smoothly during straightening. The problem is that the ceramic coating gradually wears off. This is, of course, a process that takes place over several months and only if the Grundig Crystal Hairstyler Straight and Curls straightening irons are used very intensively. Once this wearing process has started, the hair is naturally no longer straightened with as little friction as it was at the beginning.

The handling

The Grundig Crystal-Hairstyler Straight and Curls straightening iron is a relatively light model, fits well in hand, and does not cause rapid fatigue of hands and arms due to its low weight. Because the heating plates are quite narrow at 2.5 centimeters, styling short hair is also a child’s play. With a length of 1.8 meters, the straightening iron also has a sufficiently long cable. Another positive feature is that a cable joint connects the straightening iron and cable. This not only makes it possible to straighten the hair in no time at all but also to create expressive curls with the Grundig Crystal Hairstyler Straight and Curls straightening iron.

Our testers were positive about the fact that the temperature can be adjusted in eight stages between 140 degrees Celsius and 210 degrees Celsius. The level of the current temperature is shown on the display. In addition, the Grundig Crystal Hairstyler Straight and Curls straightening iron has a lock function so that the temperature is not accidentally adjusted during straightening.

The Grundig Crystal Hairstyler Straight and Curls straightening iron needs about 60 seconds to reach operating temperature, and switches off automatically after about 60 minutes.

The performance

All in all, the Grundig Crystal Hairstyler Straight and Curls straightening irons give a good performance. The hair glides gently through the ceramic-coated heating plates, so straightening is neither a tugging nor a pulling action. One drawback – for example, compared to our test winner, the Braun Satin Hair 7 ST 710 Straightener – is that the appliance has no flexible heating plates. The integrated plates make it more difficult to distribute the pressure evenly over all hairs in a strand, and sometimes strands get pinched so that you might lose a hair or two during use.

Nevertheless, the straightening results are impressive – especially in comparison to the first and second place of our product test.

Because the Grundig Crystal Hairstyler Straight and Curls straightening iron have a rounded housing, curls can also be styled without any problems. Depending on your technique, you can use the appliance to create softly falling waves or medium-sized curls.

Conclusion

Without doubt, the Grundig Crystal Hairstyler Straight and Curls straightening iron stands out from the numerous competitor models due to its outward appearance – it comes in bright pink. But this also makes sense, as it is designed for the younger target group. This straightening iron is a multistyler that can be used to turn enchanting curls as well as straighten hair for the Sleek Look. The results can be seen in both cases! Although the appliance does not have flexible heating plates and the ceramic coating wears off over several months of intensive use, the Grundig Crystal-Hairstyler Straight and Curls straightening iron is hard to beat in terms of value for money and therefore comes third in our ranking!

PROS:
  • is suitable both for smoothing and styling curls
  • Temperature adjustable between 140 degrees Celsius and 210 degrees Celsius
  • the attractive design in bright pink
  • Display
CONS:
  • Heating plates not flexible
  • Wear of the ceramic coating with intensive use over several months

Remington S9500 Pearl

REMINGTON’s flagship model: The Remington S9500 Pearl straightening iron is a product of the company’s Professional line and is without doubt Remington’s flagship model. The straightening iron is equipped with all helpful (additional) functions. In our product test, the Remington S9500 Pearl straightening iron came in a good fourth place.

The equipment

The Remington S9500 Pearl straightening iron is a product that has several functions – such as a high-quality ceramic coating with real pearls, a high-quality LCD display, a transport lock, and a manually adjustable temperature. The Remington S9500 Pearl straightening iron is delivered in a stylish storage bag, which is also heat-resistant.

The features of the Remington S9500 Pearl Straightening Iron at a glance:

  • manual adjustment of the temperature between 150 degrees Celsius and 235 degrees Celsius
  • has a high-quality ceramic coating with real pearls
  • has heating plates, which are spring-mounted for even pressure distribution
  • with 11 centimeters very long heating plates
  • speedy heating time up to 150 degrees Celsius
  • three-meter long cable with joint
  • Automatic switch-off after 60 minutes

The processing

The fact that the Remington S9500 Pearl straightening iron is the company’s flagship is evident, among other things, from its high-quality quality. All components of the straightening iron have a well-thought-out position; the display of the Remington S9500 Pearl straightening iron is only visible when the device is switched on; the design of the model elegant and noble.

It’s worth noting that, according to Remington, the heating plates of the straightening iron have a high-quality ceramic double coating and have real pearls.

The handling

The Remington S9500 Pearl straightening iron sits extremely well in the hand and the operation is intuitive. Thanks to the existing + and – buttons, the desired temperature can be set very easily. Once the appliance has heated up to the desired temperature, the display stops flashing. If you want to use the Remington S9500 Pearl Straightener at its lowest setting, the warm-up time is only 15 seconds. Even the maximum temperature is only 30 seconds – you see, in terms of readiness for use, the Remington S9500 Pearl straightening iron can hardly compete with any other model.

In the course of the test, fixing the temperature so that it isn’t accidentally adjusted during use proved to be a useful feature. All you have to do is keep the temperature button pressed a bit longer, namely two seconds.

On the other hand, if you hold down the + button for two seconds, you can turn on the Turbo Boost function. When this function is activated, the Remington S9500 Pearl straightener automatically heats up to a temperature of 235 degrees Celsius, a very high temperature that can damage hair if used too often or incorrectly. After a time interval of about 30 seconds, the temperature is lowered again – also automatically.

The Remington S9500 also features spring-mounted heating plates, which distribute the pressure evenly and prevent individual hairs from getting trapped.

The Remington S9500 Pearl straightening iron is also supplied with a heat-resistant base. On this, you can place the hot straightening iron without hesitation.

The unit also has a lock function so that you can store it in the supplied storage bag after cooling down to save space.

The performance

The Remington S9500 Pearl Straightener glides wonderfully easily through the hair and provides a breathtaking shine and easy combing.

Although the straightening iron has no ionic technology, there is no static charge of the individual hair strands. If you don’t want to straighten your hair, but want to create expressive curls, the Remington S9500 Pearl straightener makes it easy.

Please note that this straightening iron generates temperatures of more than 200 degrees Celsius both during regular use and when using the Turbo Boost function. If such temperatures affect the hair, lasting damage to the inner hair fibers is likely. Even if this can produce outstanding straightening results – at least initially – the user manual does not contain any warning from the manufacturer in this regard, which has led to points being deducted in the present product test.

As you would expect, the Bosch PHS7961 Straightening Iron ClassicCoiffeur is a product with an excellent finish. In the course of our product test, no wear of the ceramic tourmaline coating could be detected, nor did the use of the Bosch PHS7961 Straightening Iron ClassicChaffeur cause gaps or cracks between the extra-long heating plates, which would have made it difficult to straighten the hair and would have impaired the result.

The handling

The plates and housing have also been specially rounded so that the straightening iron can also be used as a curling iron. To adjust the styling to the hair structure, different temperature levels are available.

On the positive side, the heating plates seal tightly when pressed together, and the Bosch PHS7961 Straightener ClassicCoiffeur has no small cracks or large gaps that could cause hair to fall out and impair the straightening result. Although some skill is required to create curls, the Bosch PHS7961 Straightening Iron ClassicCoiffeur makes this task child’s play.

The performance

The straightening iron from Bosch scores with a solid performance. This is reflected not only in the reports of our testers but also in the numerous positive evaluations of the Bosch PHS7961 Straightening Iron ClassicCoiffeur. It doesn’t matter whether you want to use the straightener to straighten your hair and create a silky, shiny Sleek Look or whether you want to use the appliance to create racy curls – thanks to the rounded heating plates, this is also possible in no time at all.

Due to the adjustable temperature of the appliance, even people with thin or already damaged hair can use the straightener at a low-temperature level without hesitation. The minimum temperature of 120 degrees Celsius is therefore ideal for styling damaged hair.

Remington S8590

HEAT PROTECTION: The Remington S8590 straightener is a product that has a therapeutic heat protection sensor so that your hair looks smooth and shiny after straightening. The sensor automatically regulates the temperature of the heating plates – this is achieved by measuring the moisture content of the hair and constantly adjusting the heat emitted.

The equipment

The Remington S8590 hair straightener has several additional functions: if the integrated automatic switch-off function shakes after 60 minutes, the device has a practical function for locking, the heating of the device can be accelerated considerably with a turbo boost button and the straightening iron releases keratin to care for the hair.

The features of the Remington S 8590 straightening iron at a glance:

  • Keratin protection technology
  • Heat protection sensor
  • automatic temperature control
  • narrow, spring-mounted and extra-long styling plates
  • digital display
  • 5 temperature levels between 160 degrees Celsius and 230 degrees Celsius manually adjustable
  • Safety shutdown
  • Transport locking

The processing

In general, the Remington S8590 straightening iron is well made, whereby of course, quality differences become clear in direct comparison with the machines that scored particularly well in our product test. Although the device is somewhat heavier, it seems to have sufficient stability and functionality.

The Remington S8590 straightening iron comes in an elegant black or silver metallic and has an ergonomic shape, which should ensure that the product can be held well in hand.

The handling

In addition to the ergonomic shape, the functional and slim design of the straightening iron makes it pleasant to use. The Remington S8590 straightening iron gets very hot very quickly, which is why it can’t be used over a longer period. In our product test, we noticed that people who have very thick hair and need a correspondingly more extended time to straighten all their hair struggle with difficulties due to the heat generated by the appliance. Another negative aspect is that the straightening iron is unstable when placed on the appliance, even on flat surfaces. The manufacturer also seems to have noticed this, as the Remington S8590 straightening iron already comes with a heat-resistant mat for placing the device on, so that the surface is not damaged.

Moreover, our testers have noticed that the Remington S8590 straightening iron is difficult to close, and the increased effort leads to permanent fatigue symptoms.

The performance

Although the machine had to score a few minus points in terms of handling, it can score points in terms of performance and, therefore, the smoothing result. The Remington S 8590 straightener glides easily and smoothly through the hair. Even if you have thicker, wavy, or very long hair.

Conclusion

The Remington S8590 is also a recommendable product – but under the reservation that certain aspects are taken into account when using the device. Because the straightening iron gets hot relatively quickly, people who have particularly dense hair growth should fall back on another model. Also, when removing the Remington S 8590 straightening iron, certain precautions should be taken due to the heat problem and the instability of the appliance itself when lying down.

Our test criteria

In the course of this test, you will learn everything you need to know about straightening irons and their use. You will not only receive information about what to look out for when buying a straightening iron, but you will also learn everything you need to know about the equipment, workmanship, handling, performance, and the advantages and disadvantages of the straightening irons we have tested. In addition, we will undertake a historical excursion together with you and search for traces of the history of the straightening iron. We will tell you who invented the straightening iron and show you important stages in the development of the straightening iron.

As part of this product test, we also provide you with information on eight different models of straightening iron, with one test winner being chosen. You can find out what to look out for when buying a straightening iron in our Buyers Guide and the FAQ section provides detailed answers to all essential questions about the straightening iron and its use. Although straightening irons – according to their name – are primarily used to straighten hair, it is also possible to use them as curling irons, especially with modern multifunctional appliances. The market offers a wide range of straightening irons, which differ enormously not only in their external properties such as color and size but also in their field of functions and price. At this point, it can already be noted that you should consider different factors when making your individual purchase decision about a straightening iron.

In the following, the various criteria on which our product test was based are explained individually. In this respect, we will consider the features of straightening irons as well as their processing, handling, performance, advantages and disadvantages, and important technical properties.

The equipment

Regarding the equipment of the different types of flat irons, inexpensive models differ enormously from high-priced models. Some straightening irons have an LC display to show the selected temperature; other straighteners are equipped with ion technology to prevent the hair from becoming electrically charged – this is important, for example, when creating a sleek look.

Other features include an integrated automatic switch-off function for more extended periods of non-use. On the one hand, this saves electricity costs; on the other hand, it minimizes the risk of fire. Some straightening irons also have a safety function that prevents the selected temperature from being adjusted during use. Modern appliances also have a memory function that can be used to record the last selected temperature. Some appliances offer the option of creating a user profile, which is particularly useful when several people share a straightening iron.

It can also be advantageous if a straightening iron has movable heating plates and a heat-insulated tip. While the tip makes it possible to straighten the hair with both hands, movable plates protect the hair better and prevent hair breakage.

A further feature is the so-called ion technology because it ensures that when the straightening iron is used, the ions released around the surrounding air combine, thus providing a balanced moisture balance of the hair.

The handling

Among the criteria that influence the user-friendliness of a device used to straighten hair is the required warm-up time before possible use. While this warm-up time can take up to 10 minutes for some straightening irons, it only takes a few seconds for other appliances. Another positive feature of some flat irons is the option of saving the temperature setting, so that the appliance is ready for use in no time at all, even if it is used repeatedly.

The user-friendly operation of the appliance is further enhanced by a rotating cable or a swivel joint on the handle of the straightening iron. In this way, the need for increased gripping during hair straightening can be avoided. Since it is also possible that a mirror is not accessible near the appliance when straightening hair, an iron with a comparatively long cable can prove useful. Also, a straightening iron should have an ergonomic shape so that it lies optimally in hand and does not cause fatigue even when hair is straightened at the back of the head.

The processing

When purchasing a straightening iron, you should, of course, also pay attention to good quality. As soon as you touch a straightening iron, you can feel whether it is stable, whether plastic, plastic or metal components have been used, etc. A good straightening iron should be made of high-quality plastic and should be robust. Because a straightening iron should be able to survive a fall, it is important to make sure that it does not feel rather “wobbly” from the beginning. In addition, make sure that the housing of the straightening iron is rounded and flows smoothly into the heating plates. Only if the straightening iron is rounded, can you be sure that you will be able to conjure up numerous styling variations?

It is also especially important to ensure that the heating plates are flat on top of each other when the straightening iron is closed. This ensures that the heat is distributed evenly and that the hair is straightened evenly. If the two plates are not positioned so that they are congruent with each other, you can assume that optimal hair straightening cannot be achieved.

And finally, you should make sure that the straightening iron has a sufficiently long power cable when you use it. As a rule, a professional straightening iron has a power cable with a length of between two and three meters. If, on the other hand, the straightening iron only has a one-meter power cable, you should not buy it. In addition, the inlet of the power cable on the straightening iron should be designed so that it is movable. Only then can you be sure that the cable can rotate while straightening the hair. An excellent guide value is a rotation angle of 360 degrees.

The performance

Due to the fact that some straightening irons work in a temperature range of more than 200°C, the use of this styling appliance is associated with specific risks for the hair. For example, if the straightening iron is not used properly, the hair can dry out, and its structure can be damaged. When buying a straightening iron, therefore, make sure that the integrated heating plates are made of ceramic. Although there are many straightening irons on the market with heating plates that have a ceramic coating, it makes more sense to buy a product with heating plates that are made of solid ceramic. Such heating plates also straighten the hair more gently. The reason for this is the evenly distributed heat. Also, make sure that the straightening iron has an integrated heat protection sensor, as this prevents the straightening plates from becoming too hot, as the maximum temperature developed by the straightening iron is automatically regulated.

Many straightening irons have adjustable heat levels – these are designed to adapt the heat level to a specific hair structure.

Ionization Many modern straightening irons have the option of ionization, and this function can usually be activated at the touch of a button. Ionization is necessary because the hair can become statically charged during treatment with a straightening iron. This usually happens when the straightening iron is pulled through your hair strand by strand because then friction occurs. If your hair is positively charged during this process, the light and fine hair, in particular, will stand out from your head. You can also observe this effect, for example, when you put on a woolen sweater. Through the ionization function of a straightening iron, the static charge is ultimately neutralized again. The result is generally visible because the hair is shiny and falls wonderfully smooth and supple.

What exactly is a hair straightener?

What woman does not want straight, shiny, and smooth hair? Also, straight hair is not only cared for but also looks very elegant. It is not without reason that the Sleek Look has been trendy for years.

But what to do if the hair doesn’t want to lie the way it should? This is the case, for example, if the humidity increases a little because then a silky, shiny hair becomes a curly look in no time at all. Vice versa, there are, of course, also numerous women who prefer a racy curly mane instead of their straight hair. No matter whether silky-shiny straight hair or curly fur – the help of a straightening iron is indispensable in both cases!

A high-quality straightening iron is an indispensable beauty tool and should not be missing in any (women’s) household. You can also see how important straightening irons have become to many women from the fact that the market also has straightening irons that are battery-powered in addition to conventional straightening irons, i.e., those that you plug into the socket. These mobile straightening irons are usually somewhat smaller and designed to fit easily into a handbag. So if you get a shower on the road or wind blows your hair curly, you can straighten your hair in no time with a mobile straightener.

Even though we assume that every modern woman knows what a straightening iron is, we would like to give a short definition for the sake of completeness. A straightening iron is a handy stick with two surfaces at its tip that can be heated. It is because of these two heatable surfaces that the straightening iron got its name, as they were initially made of iron. The reason for this is that iron can be heated very quickly.

Even though iron appliances for heating were still put in the oven about 100 years ago to straighten hair or to make beautiful curls, this has changed in the meantime. Today, straightening irons – also known as hair straighteners – are made of materials that conduct heat well and are too light. In the past, as today, individual strands of hair are finally clamped between the plates and straightened. A high-quality straightening iron can be regulated in terms of the heat it emits, i.e., the temperature. This is particularly relevant because different hair types can tolerate different levels of heat without being damaged. Thus, fine hair can be straightened at a lower temperature than thicker hair.

Thanks to the temperature regulation of straightening irons, you no longer have to fear, as with older hair straightener models, that each application will destroy your hair a little more. Whether you ultimately straighten your hair with straightening iron, whether you add volume to your hair or turn your hair into a wild curly mane, is entirely up to you.

How straightening irons work

As already briefly mentioned, the way smoothing irons work is relatively simple: after connecting the appliance to a suitable power source, you have to set the desired temperature. A good straightening iron generally has a thermostat. Depending on the styling you want to achieve, the temperature should be between 80°C and 220°C. Make sure that you do not exceed this value because then there is a risk of damaging your hair.

Once your straightening iron has reached the desired temperature, you can place your hair strand by strand between the two plates for straightening and pull it slowly from the top to the tips of the hair. This movement creates a slight pressure on the one hand, and on the other hand, heat is transferred to the hair. In combination, both ensure that your hair becomes wonderfully smooth. Because of this procedure, the comparison with iron is probably often strained.

Of course, a straightening iron is not limited to this function. In fact, with this styling tool, hair can not only be straightened because with the help of a straightening iron, but other hairstyles can also be conjured up, or even curls can be created. You don’t have to pull the straightening iron straight down, turn it.

Before you store your straightening iron after use, you should let it cool down in peace.

Major purchase criteria of a straightening iron

Straighteners are the opposite of curling irons. With the help of high-quality and functional straightening irons, you can easily transform wavy and curly hair into smooth and silky, shiny hair. This is achieved by drawing the individual strands of hair through the heating plates of a straightening iron, which have a specific temperature. The following Buyers Guide tells you what you should pay particular attention to when buying a straightening iron.

What do you expect from a straightening iron?
The first step is to find out what you want from a straightening iron and what the metal should do. In this respect, the question of whether you would like to use your new straightening iron to straighten your hair or to turn it into a voluminous curl from time to time is particularly relevant.

Other aspects are also important: Would you like to use your new straightening iron exclusively in your own four walls, or should it be a smaller model that you can easily store in your handbag, and that has a battery so that you are independent of a stationary power supply. You should differentiate between the two areas of use mentioned above because if you want to acquire a very powerful straightening iron, the mobile version is usually not necessary. If, on the other hand, you decide to buy a straightening iron for on the move, you will generally have to make concessions in terms of the performance of the device. As you can see, you already have an essential purchase decision to make at this point.

What features should your new straightening iron have?

In addition to deciding whether you want a home or portable straightening iron, you need to consider what features or functions your new straightening iron should have to meet your needs.

  • Coating: As a rule, all modern straightening irons now have a high-quality ceramic coating. The reason for this is simply because with ceramic-coated or all-ceramic heating plates, your hair – whether you want to straighten it or style it curly – is much less stressed than with metal heating plates.
  • Automatic switch-off: Another aspect to consider is whether your straightening iron should have an automatic switch-off function. Another safety feature of irons is that they will not turn on until the On button is pressed for several seconds.
  • Temperature control: It is also essential that your new straightening iron has individual temperature control. This is of particular importance because an excessively high operating temperature of the straightening iron can permanently damage the structure of your hair. Also, thin or already damaged hair can only tolerate less heat than healthy and thick hair.
  • Equipment: When purchasing your new straightening iron, make sure that the cable of your new straightening iron is sufficiently long – ideally between two and three meters – and connected to the housing of the straightening iron via a swivel joint. If you don’t have time to let the appliance cool down in the morning after hairstyling before storing it in the cabinet, your new straightening iron should also be supplied in a fireproof bag. This way, you can prevent fire damage in your home, and you can concentrate on your work.
  • Temperature range: To ensure that you can enjoy your hair for a long time, you should also make sure that you can adjust the temperature of the straightening iron individually when you buy it. This should always be in a range between 170 and 190 degrees Celsius. Also: Never use temperatures above 200 degrees Celsius when styling your hair, as this will cause permanent damage to the structure of your hair. The result is strawy looking hair and hair loss.
  • Price-performance ratio: And finally, you should, of course, make sure that the price-performance rate is right when buying a new straightening iron. In addition to our product test, you can also take a closer look at the reviews of other consumers on the Internet or on sales platforms such as Amazon to get a good impression in this regard.

Other important characteristics of straightening irons are the following:

  • Display for reading the temperature
  • Key lock to prevent the temperature from being adjusted unintentionally
  • Ion technology to neutralize the static charge of your hair
  • Lock function for safe and space-saving storage of the straightening iron
  • a heat-insulated or fireproof bag
  • quick heating-up time

If a straightening iron also has a rounded housing, you can also use the product without any problems to conjure up breathtaking curls.

How much money should you spend on buying a good straightening iron?

By taking this straightening iron product test and looking at the straightening iron market, it quickly becomes clear that the prices for purchasing a straightening iron vary enormously. While both straightening irons can be found in various online shops for a price starting at $15, you can, of course, also buy very expensive straightening irons that cost well over $100. There is no general answer to the question of how much you should personally spend on a straightening iron. The cost of a straightening iron depends on many factors: In addition to the manufacturer or brand, the range of functions, any accessories, and the materials used are also of decisive importance.

Before you decide on a specific straightening iron, you should carefully research your requirements and only then choose the right product.

Which straightening iron is best suited to my individual needs?

Which straightening iron you should ultimately choose depends on your requirements or demands on the styling tool on the one hand and the condition of your hair on the other. If you have thick and voluminous hair, or if you have wavy or even curly hair, it makes more sense to buy a straightening iron that allows a slightly higher temperature setting.

If, on the other hand, you wear a cheeky short haircut or if your hair is medium-long, it makes sense to buy a small, rather narrow straightening iron. This is handier and, in your case, useful.

Extra tip: Why don’t you use your straightening iron as a curling iron at the same time to add volume to finer hair? No matter which option you choose, always work at the lowest possible temperature so that the structure of your hair is not damaged.

What types of coatings or coating materials are available for the heating plates of straightening irons?

The fact is, the smoother the heating or styling plates of a straightening iron are, the easier and gentler it is to straighten the hair. The reason for this is obvious: If the surface of the plates is not even, the hair is damaged by the pulling through, i.e., by friction, on its surface. Therefore, when choosing the right straightening iron, the following basic rule applies: Metal heating plates should be avoided because they make your hair split and brittle. In contrast, straightening irons with heating plates that have a Teflon or ceramic coating is much gentler. Both types of coating ensure that the heat is evenly distributed on the straightening surface. If the coating also contains tourmaline, static charging of the hair is prevented. As a result, the hair stands up less tangled and looks even smoother after treatment with the straightening iron.

Extra tip: When buying a straightening iron, also make sure that the heating plates are not rigidly integrated, but spring instead. This guarantees easier and more efficient use.

Should different straightening irons be used for different hairstyles?

When buying a straightening iron, you should, of course, consider your particular hairstyle. For example, if you have beautiful long hair, you should make sure that the heating plates are relatively wide. If, on the other hand, you only want to straighten your bangs every day, it is essential that the straightening iron is not pulled straight down, but rather screwed in like a round brush. For this purpose, the straightening iron should have rounded edges. The same applies if you have short hair.

Which manufacturers of straightening irons are the best or especially recommended?

There are several different manufacturers of straightening irons: In addition to Good Hair Days, Braun, Remington, Babyliss, or Philips, Carrera also produces high-quality straightening irons. Which of the mentioned and not mentioned manufacturers are the best, depends to a certain extent on your individual preference as well as your particular demands on the straightening iron.

Our test winner from Braun, Satin Hair Colour 7, for example, ensures that the hair is moisturized from the air by producing negatively charged ions.

Besides Braun, Philips, Grundig, or Bosch, there are also straightening iron manufacturers that specialize in this. The most renowned manufacturers of straightening irons include GHD (Good Hair Day), L’Oreal Paris, and Udo Walz.

Due to the considerable heat development, a straightening iron should, of course, have specific safety features to avoid dangers. Probably the most important aspect in this respect is the automatic safety cut-out, which prevents harm, especially if the straightening iron is accidentally left connected to the mains. This safety feature will usually shut a straightening iron down automatically after a period of 30 minutes to one hour when it is not in use. Some manufacturers also refer to this function as sleep mode.

It is also a good idea to use a straightening iron made of a heat-resistant material, as this will protect you from possible burns when using the styling tool.

To protect your hair, it is advisable to choose a straightening iron with a temperature display so that you always know what temperature you are treating your hair with.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of straightening irons?

When buying a straightening iron, it is advisable to buy a product that has already been tested or the product of a well-known manufacturer. Although, or rather precisely because so-called no-name straightening irons are much cheaper, they are often hair-damaging, have a small range of functions, and, when it comes to safety, are usually not above the current standard of high-quality straightening irons.

In the following overview you will learn about the advantages and disadvantages of straightening irons in general:

PROS:
  • no matter if wavy or curly hair, after treatment with a straightening iron they become wonderfully smooth
  • even unwanted hair and large curls can be styled with the straightening iron
  • usually easy handling and therefore also realizable for untrained persons
  • quickly ready
CONS:
  • can damage the hair if used improperly
  • cheap products usually do not have sufficient safety precautions

Things to know & important facts About the straightening iron

In the following section, we answer all the questions that are important about straightening, buying a straightening iron, and protecting your hair.

What should you always bear in mind when straightening your hair?

When it comes to straightening your hair, do not use the straightening iron every day, but take a break from time to time. In this way, you can make sure that you are still putting too much strain on your hair. As far as the frequency of straightening your hair is concerned, the following rule of thumb applies: the more well-groomed and strong your hair is, the more often you can straighten it into shape with a straightening iron. If necessary, you can straighten your hair daily. If you have susceptible and fine hair, you should not use a straightening iron more than twice a week. Also, make sure you keep your hair at the right temperature. Again, whatever your hair type, never use a temperature higher than 200°C.

Besides, you should choose a straightening iron with heating plates that have a ceramic coating. This ensures that the heat is evenly distributed on the heating plates. It also counteracts the static charging of the hair. When buying your new straightening iron, make sure that it has an integrated automatic switch-off function. Should you be in a hurry in the morning and forget to switch off your straightening iron, there is still no danger.

Is it also possible to perfectly smooth curls with the straightening iron?

You have a curly mane by nature, but want nothing more than to wear a trendy Silky Sleek look? Then the straightening iron is an indispensable tool for you because, with it, you will achieve a more significant smoothing effect than with a round brush and hairdryer.

Because the use of a straightening iron changes the hair structure, at least for a short time, you should never do without heat protection. In this respect, the market today offers a wide range of different products with spray, mousse, fluid & co. You can not only protect your hair adequately but also give it a silky finish.

To smooth your curls, you should first spray the heat protection generously onto your towel-dried hair from a distance of about 20 centimeters and then comb it with a wide-toothed comb. In a second step, blow-dry your hair at least half-dry on the cold setting. Finally, in a third step, straighten the hair strand by strand with a straightening iron.

Usually, the Sleek Look lasts for about two days, but after the first night, you should treat the hair again briefly with the straightening iron.

Extra tip: If you want to treat curly hair regularly with the straightening iron, you should also use a high-quality hair treatment once a week – ideally for damaged or dry hair.

Should the hair be given heat protection before straightening?

On the market for hair care products, you can now find a variety of special sprays, fluids, creams, but also mousse or oil. All the products that come under the heat protection label should have in common that they form a kind of buffer between your hair and the straightening iron. The purpose of heat protection products is to prevent the hair from being exposed to high temperatures, which can damage the hair structure.

If you are surprised to see steam escaping when using a heat protection product – whether it is an oil, lotion, or other fluid – we can reassure you because this is normal.

Is it advisable to prepare the hair for straightening with other products before using the straightening iron?

In addition to the heat protection products already mentioned, the hair care range also includes products that prepare your hair for treatment with the straightening iron. In addition to specific moisturizing shampoos, there are also conditioners and hair treatments that promote the straightening process and protect your hair at the same time.

To prepare your hair adequately for straightening, you can wash it the day before with appropriate moisturizing shampoo and then apply a conditioner or cure. However, if you would like to treat your hair with the straightening iron immediately after washing, you should blow-dry your hair at least semi-dry beforehand – preferably on the cold setting. The reason for this is that wet hair is much more susceptible and can snap off more quickly when straightened with the straightening iron.

Can the hair be straightened every day with the straightening iron?

As a rule, hair that has been straightened carefully and with a high-quality straightening iron does not have to be “treated” anew every day. When buying your straightening iron, make sure that it has an individually adjustable temperature and also has a high-quality ceramic coating. If the entire surface of the heating plates heats up evenly, you can “style” your hair at a lower temperature on the first and second day after straightening. In this way, you do not stress your hair every day, so that it is not damaged too much.

Does the hair color fade due to the high temperatures when hair is straightened?

Colored hair is more susceptible to heat damage than hair that has not been colored. Especially hair that has been bleached or dyed in red tones suffers from the application of a straightening iron. Therefore, make sure to use a special heat protection agent. In the meantime, the market offers a variety of effective care and protection products that are applied before straightening colored hair and provide optimum protection.

What is the exact procedure for straightening hair?

First of all, you have to heat your straightening iron. Usually, in conventional straightening iron reaches its average temperature after one minute at the latest. If this is the case, you should take a strand of hair – ideally equipped with heat protection – and pull it through the two heating plates of the straightening iron, starting at the hairline and continuing to the tips. You must now repeat this procedure strand by strand.

Attention: Please never apply directly to the attachment. It also makes sense to straighten the lower top hair in a first step and the upper hair in a second step. Also, make sure that you perform even movements. If, for example, you treat some hair strands or even parts of the hair longer than others, this can be visible in the result, although it is also possible that the mentioned hair areas are damaged.

Always carry out a large arc during smoothing to ensure that no protruding tips are produced. Finally, after finishing the straightening process, apply an anti-frizz product and, if necessary, fix your hairstyle with a gentle hairspray.

What are the alternatives to the straightening iron?

In addition to the straightening iron, you can also straighten your hair with other tools and products – of course, always depending on its structure, length, and condition. You can either use specific hair straightening products, use specific tools such as a microfibre towel or use other styling tools such as a hairdryer and round brush, a straightening brush, or an air styler. (Here you can later link to the blog post “Alternatives to the straightening iron”).

Finally, it is also possible to subject the hair to a chemical treatment, through which unloved waves disappear for a more extended period. However, you should discuss whether a chemical treatment is possible for you in advance with an expert, namely your trusted hairdresser.

What exactly is chemical straightening?

In principle, chemical smoothing works just like a permanent wave – only in reverse. Accordingly, wavy or curly hair is transformed from a state of continuous tension into a state of lasting relaxation during the chemical straightening process. Because of this procedure, the hair products used by hairdressers for this purpose are often referred to as relaxers. This, however, plays down a process that can be described as aggressive. In the first step, the structure of the hair is prepared by the supply of chemical substances so that the proteins are loosened. In a second step, the hair is now combed until it is smooth, and then, in the third step with one, the hair is fixed with the help of a chemical substance so that the new hairstyle is permanent. Because chemical agents are used to making profound changes to the hair structure and that this process is to some extent aggressive, chemical straightening should only be carried out by an expert. Remember that the substances necessary for chemical straightening are highly effective.

Depending on the length and type of hair, the cost of chemical straightening is between $70 and $200, and the result lasts between two and six months.

Can curls also be created with the straightening iron?

With a suitable straightening iron, you can, of course, not only straighten your hair but also conjure up expressive curls. This is possible if you use your straightening iron like a curling iron. If you would like to try this, you should first add a sufficient amount of conditioning curling protection to dry hair. In a second step, divide your hair into two parts: while you start to work the lower part of your hair with the curling iron strand by strand, it is best to tie the upper part of your hair into a braid. To style curls with the straightening iron, start at the roots, pull the straightening iron down about 1.5 to 2 centimeters, then turn it 180 degrees and pull it down to the ends. Repeat this movement, strand by strand, until you have transformed all your hair into enchanting curls.

In the last step, you should fix your hair either with hair language or with hair lacquer. To get a great finish, comb the hair with your fingers.

Can wet hair also be straightened with the straightening iron?

Even though the steam produced when straightening wet hair may seem dangerous, it does not harm your hair if you straighten it when it is wet – but experts advise against it.

Instead, they recommend waiting at least until the hair is towel dry. The reason for this is simply because the straightening effect is quicker with semi-dry or dry hair. In addition, the hair structure does not change again – because the hair is already dry.

If you are nevertheless a fan of straightening your hair when it is wet, you should choose a special straightening iron. The market offers models that support the straightening of wet hair.

Is it normal that the straightening iron sometimes makes strange noises?

Yes, it is normal for your straightening iron to make funny noises. Usually, there is a slight hissing sound, which is mainly caused by innovative devices with ion function and is caused by the integrated ionizer of the straightening iron.

Over time, the heating plates of the straightening iron become dirty. What is the best way to clean them?

The heating plates of your straightening iron can become dirty from the previous use of styling products – usually, there are residues of the care products on the smoothing surfaces. These can be easily removed with a soft cloth. It is helpful if you moisten the heating surfaces with some warm water beforehand. However, the material of which the heating plates are made plays a major role in this respect: heating plates with a high-quality ceramic coating are much easier to clean than heating plates made of metal.
